Childhood Obesity Awareness

One in 3 children in the United States qualifies as overweight or obese, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic.  This puts nearly one third of America’s children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke – conditions usually associated with adulthood.  Greater disparities exist among young Hispanics and children of color.  Families should make small changes, like keeping fresh fruit within their children’s reach or going on a family walk after dinner, to help remedy this epidemic. The Community Youth Development program helps families incorporate best practices for improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, and decreasing computer and television time.  For more information, contact Pamela Lee at plee@ccgd.org
