Get Help with Your Heating Bills

DALLAS - The extreme weather may have passed, but there’s one part still ahead that people are not looking forward to – the heating bill. For a lot of people the bill will be a huge strain on the family finances. The Community Council of Greater Dallas connects people with social services.

Callers from across North Texas can dial 211 to speak to a specialist and get information about those services. Utility assistance accounts for about 35 percent of the council’s call volume. Click Here to view clip


Federal Benefit Payments Are Going Electronic


Electronic payments are:

SAFER, EASIER, and MORE RELIABLE

Anyone applying for Social Security, Veterans benefits or other federal benefits on or after May 1, 2011, will receive their payments electronically starting with their first payment. Anyone currently receiving federal benefit checks will need to switch to an electronic payment option by March 1, 2013. Benefit recipients can choose to receive their payments by direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to a Direct Express Debit MasterCard account. Aetna Obesity Grant Educates Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove Youth


We are fighting childhood obesity! The Aetna Foundation has awarded The Community Youth Development program a $50,000 grant for obesity prevention. Getting Fit for Life 2 promotes healthy lifestyles choices by encouraging youth to make healthy food choices, to drink enough water, to reduce TV, video, and computer screen time, and to get at least an hour of physical activity each day.

Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL)


Do you want to make life better for older Texans? If you answered yes, consider running for the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL).

February 28, 2011 is the last day to enter the race to become one of 6 Texas Silver-Haired Legislators for Dallas County. Legislators are elected every two years to draft resolutions on aging issues that are presented to the state legislature www.txshl.org.

The election will be held May 24, 2011 at locations throughout Dallas County.

2-1-1 North Central Texas – Dallas has collaborated with TXU Energy to host In My Shoes, A Poverty Simulation Exercise on February 11, 2011 Click here. Participants simulate the life of a low-income family and navigate financial, medical and social challenges in this three-hour exercise. 100 seats are available the training is free and includes lunch.
