Youth Leadership Development
The Community
Youth Development program offers a Youth Leadership Development program that
works with youth from the 75216 and 75217 zip codes. The program operates in
these zip codes because juvenile arrest rates rank among the highest in the
state. Youth in these communities often deal with poverty, high crime rates, and
low graduation rates. The Leadership Development program inspires youth to
become change agents within their local communities. Students take charge of and
support many community initiatives.
Its college readiness component provides exposure to college life, and preps youth for success in a campus environment. College tours acclimate youth to the environment by allowing youth to attend workshops on financial aid, admissions, and the opportunity to sit in actual classes. This exposure changes lives. Youth envision a positive future for their lives, and work toward attaining careers, not just jobs, with increased earning potential; thereby becoming more productive citizens who are able and willing to give back to their communities.
