The Gift of Time

Calling all caregivers to take a few minutes to find the help you need to relieve your stress so that you can enjoy the holidays.  The National Care Planning Council's website www.longtermcarelink.net contains hundreds of articles with tips and advice for caregivers and their families.  Avoid burn-out by recognizing the need for outside help with caregiving.

An overloaded caregiver often experiences the following pattern:
 

  • 1 to 18 months >  Caregiver is confident, in control, and coping well.  Friends and family provide support.
  • 20 to 36 months > Caregiver experiences mood swings, takes medication to sleep, ceases to socialize, feels lonely and helpless.  Outside help diminishes. 
  • 38 to 50 months > Caregiver needs antidepressants or tranquilizers to cope.  Physical and emotional health decline.  Fatigue affects ability to focus, to use good judgment, or to make rational decisions.

After a prolonged period of time, caregiving becomes overwhelming and too difficult to endure any longer.  At this breaking point, outside help may be needed to provide the caregiver with time off.

Professional Care Providers
 

  • Financial Planner or Reverse Mortgage Specialist > Helps find funds to pay for a professional care provider
  • Geriatric Care Manager > Guides caregiver and family through maze of long-term care issues
  • Elder Law Attorney > Resolves legal problems
  • Elder Mediator > Solves disputes between family members
  • Community Service Organizations > Provides respite care assistance
  • Veterans Administration > Offers cash benefits for veterans to pay for in-home care or assisted living

Enjoy this holiday season.  Give yourself the gift of time by seeking outside help to ease the burden of providing daily care for your loved one. You owe it to yourself.
