Gold Medal Kids

Increasing opportunities for physical activity

Gold Medal Kids increases options for children ages 5-17 in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods to enjoy physical activity, movement and play. Since research shows that individuals exercise more if there is a social group attached to the physical activity, the activities will be delivered through year-round physical activity clubs. Club activities are focused on increasing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, helping children reach or maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).

Bike Club:

The first club piloted for children from the Vickery Meadow neighborhood was a bicycling club for youth ages 10-14. The youngsters started bicycling in November 2009 with the Dallas Police Athletic League serving as adult leaders.

When weather allowed, club members were transported to White Rock Lake for Saturday rides through April 2010. By the second week, the children were already riding nine miles and expressing exhilaration at the enjoyment of this great exercise in such a beautiful setting.

Jump Rope Club:

The Community Council launched a jump roping club in July 2010. These Vickery Meadow pilot programs are the first of many fitness activities anticipated for Dallas children.
